Lesson 1.4 Science Explains Days, Seasons & Years

Some of the biggest “why” questions have beautifully simple scientific answers. Let’s use what we know to explain three things you experience all the time: days, seasons, and years.

Why do we have days and nights?
The Earth spins like a giant top, making one full turn about every 24 hours. The side of Earth facing the Sun has daytime; the side turned away has night. As Earth keeps spinning,
your part of the world rotates into the light and back out again so day always follows night.

Why do we have seasons?
The Earth is tilted on its axis, like a slightly leaning spinning top. Because of that tilt, different parts of the planet receive more or less direct sunlight at different times of the year. More direct sunlight means warmer weather (summer); less direct sunlight means cooler weather (winter). The tilt not the distance from the Sun is the real reason for the seasons.

Why do we have years?
While Earth spins, it is also travelling in a huge loop around the Sun. One complete trip around the Sun takes about 3651⁄4 days — and we call that one year. (Those leftover
quarter-days are why we add a leap day every four years!) 

Notice how this works: a few clear scientific ideas — spinning, tilting, and orbiting — explain experiences shared by every person on Earth. That’s the power of science. It takes everyday mysteries and reveals the patterns underneath. And those same patterns get measured with math, tracked with technology, and used by engineers and even AI systems that need to know the date, the season, or the position of the Sun.
