Lesson 1.1 Science Answers “Why”

Have you ever asked why the sky is blue, why ice floats, or why your phone gets warm when you play a game for a long time? If you have, you’ve already started thinking like a scientist. Science is the careful, curious way people ask questions about the world and look for answers backed by evidence. It isn’t only a subject at school or a lab full of bubbling test tubes.

Science is a habit of mind. It starts with curiosity noticing something and wondering about it and then it does something powerful: instead of just guessing, it tests.

Scientists follow a simple loop again and again:
1. Observe: look closely at the world and notice something interesting. An observation is information you gather using your senses or tools.
2. Ask a question: turn your curiosity into a clear “why” or “how.”
3. Make a hypothesis: a hypothesis is a smart, testable guess about the answer. It’s okay to be unsure; that’s the whole point.
4. Test and gather evidence: run an experiment, measure, and record what really happens.
5. Decide: does the evidence support your guess, or do you need a better one? This loop is why science is so trustworthy. A scientist doesn’t say “I believe it”  they say
“let’s check.” When new evidence shows up, good scientists are willing to change their minds. That habit, asking and checking instead of just repeating what we hear, is one of the most useful skills you can build, in science and in life.

Science also reaches everywhere: it helps us understand nature (how plants grow and ecosystems connect), Earth (weather, oceans, earthquakes), space (planets, stars, galaxies), and even ourselves (how our bodies and brains work). Wherever there’s a “why,” science is the tool for finding the answer. Key Idea: Science is a way of thinking observe, question, make a hypothesis, test, and let the evidence decide.
